WHAT: UPMC McKeesport will present a free health education discussion that will explain the key differences between dementia and depression, the roles various medical professionals play in treatment, as well as advice on where to turn for care.
• “Understanding Dementia,” by Barbara Nightingale, M.D., will explain the differences between dementia and depression—and the roles various medical professionals play in its treatment. She’ll also review current medication and behavioral therapy options.
• “Identifying Depression,” by Lawson Bernstein, M.D., will explore the best ways to identify depression. He’ll offer advice on where to turn for care, from primary care physicians to psychiatrists and therapists. Medication and psychotherapy treatment options also will be discussed.

WHY: Dementia is a cognitive disorder while depression is a mood disorder, but in older adults, it can be hard to tell the difference. Recognizing the symptoms is key to getting the right treatment and care for your loved one.
