UPMC Williamsport Boosts Regional Cardiac Care With Specialized CSU‑ALS Training Program

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – UPMC Williamsport has implemented a specialized cardiac resuscitation training program to improve outcomes for patients recovering from open‑heart surgery. Known as Cardiac Surgical Unit Advanced Life Support (CSU‑ALS), the program provides clinical teams with training tailored specifically to the unique needs of post‑operative cardiothoracic patients.

Traditional resuscitation methods can be unsafe for these patients, whose recovery after heart surgery requires specialized responses. CSU‑ALS offers an evidence‑based, safer approach for managing rare but serious complications.

UPMC Williamsport launched the program in early 2025 after nurses and physicians identified the need for more specialized training in the ICU. With support from Susquehanna Health Foundation and donors, John W. and Anne Rich, the hospital received funding for certifications, instructor training, and simulation equipment.

As part of the rollout, seven UPMC clinicians and floor nurses became certified CSU‑ALS instructors, allowing UPMC Williamsport to provide recurring CSU‑ALS certification internally. Since implementation, more than 30 staff members have earned certification, with additional training ongoing.

“CSU‑ALS helps ensure our teams are fully prepared to care for patients who experience life‑threatening complications after heart surgery,” said Elliot Hoy, director, Intensive Care Unit, UPMC Williamsport. “This program brings an even higher level of cardiac expertise to our community.”

The long‑term goal is for UPMC Williamsport to become a regional training hub, opening CSU‑ALS courses to neighboring health systems and pursuing designation as a CSU‑ALS Center of Excellence.
