Prostate Biopsy

The prostate is a male reproductive gland; it produces a fluid that is an ingredient of ejaculation.

If you or your doctor notice something abnormal about the size, shape, or function of your prostate, your doctor may suspect prostate disease.

Types of Prostate Disease

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia is enlargement of the prostate. This condition causes difficulty with urination and is common in men as they age.
  • Prostate cancer is a disease caused by abnormal cell growth in the prostate. Prostate cancer cells can spread to other organs and tissues throughout the body.

If your doctor suspects that your prostate may be diseased, he or she may refer you for further testing, which may include performing a biopsy.

The Role of the Pathologist

The pathologist will examine your prostate tissue biopsy sample and provide a diagnosis that will help your doctor formulate the most appropriate treatment plan for you.
