UPMC Contributes More Than You Realize

In 2024, UPMC provided more than $5 billion in community benefits, including nearly $2 billion for contribution categories on IRS Form 990 Schedule H.

Our broader community impact includes local, state, and federal taxes paid, unreimbursed Medicare costs, and investments in facilities, equipment, and technology.

Going Above and Beyond

UPMC contributes more than its fair share in Pennsylvania:

  • Charity Care and Costs for Those in Need
    • UPMC provides nearly one-quarter of hospital charity care in Pennsylvania, but cares for 18 percent of patients in the Commonwealth.
  • Health and Wellness Programs and Charitable Contributions
    • UPMC provides more funding for community health programs than any other health system in Pennsylvania.
  • Medical Research and Education
    • UPMC contributes more than half of all hospital-funded research in the state.

UPMC Mobile Health Center

UPMC unveiled its new Mobile Health Center designed to bring high-quality health care directly to rural communities across north central Pennsylvania. This helps individuals facing transportation barriers, or other circumstances, to receive the care they need. Learn more about this initiative.

Building Stronger, Healthier Communities

At UPMC, life changing means putting people and communities first. Every day, our 100,000 employees work to provide essential resources across the region.

Reaching Out in So Many Ways

UPMC is enhancing health and wellness through more than 3,000 free and subsidized community programs, including:

  • Immunizations, screenings, home visits, and transportation.
  • Support for seniors, children, new moms, and people with disabilities.
  • Emergency preparedness, access to healthy foods, cancer awareness, and job readiness training.

Addressing Food Insecurity

UPMC partners with 412 Food Rescue, which battles two problems: food waste and food insecurity. Through its work, 412 Food Rescue collects food that would otherwise go to waste and delivers it to people in need. Read the full story.

UPMC partners with the University of Pittsburgh to combine unmatched innovation, research, and clinical expertise with a deep commitment to putting people at the heart of everything we do.


Medical Assistant Trainee Program

Students enrolled in the UPMC Medical Assistant paid training program undergo clinical rotations, didactic skills modules, a cost-free MA certification exam, an externship placement at a UPMC in Central Pa. outpatient clinic, and support in applying for and beginning a permanent position. More than $50 Billion Economic Impact

UPMC accounts for more than a quarter of the statewide economic impact of Pennsylvania hospitals.
