Transfusion Medicine

UPMC Content 3

Blood transfusions can save lives, but doctors must also understand the underlying disorders that require blood transfusion.

If the blood loss is the result of an accident, no further investigation is needed, but true bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia, demand further evaluation.

The Role of the Transfusion Pathologist

Transfusion pathologists are the doctors who:

  • diagnose and treat bleeding problems
  • select and administer blood products
  • monitor patients for reactions that may develop due to  transfusions

They are an integral part of the medical team during those critical times when a person's life may be in jeopardy due to severe blood loss or a coagulation disorder.
