Peter Adler, MD

Dr. Adler earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and completed a residency in emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. He is board-certified in emergency medicine and has been practicing since 2009.

Michael Barton, MD

Chief of Emergency Medicine Services at UPMC Passavant

Dr. Barton was granted a Bachelor of Science in biology from Pennsylvania State University in 1993 and was granted a Doctor of Medicine in 1997 from the Temple University School of Medicine. Dr. Barton joined UPMC Emergency Medicine in July 2017, and was promoted to Associate Chief of Emergency Services at UPMC Passavant in November 2022.

Tiffany Behringer, MD

Dr. Behringer received her doctorate of medicine from the University of Pittsburgh and completed her emergency medicine residency at Vanderbilt Medical Center. She has been in practice since 2015.

Marc Eubanks, MD

Chief of Emergency Medicine Services at UPMC St. Margaret

Dr. Eubanks earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine with residency training and subsequent EMS fellowship at Allegheny General Hospital. Dr. Eubanks completed a Master’s in Public Management with a focus in Health Systems Management from Carnegie Mellon in 2013 and has been in practice since 1999.

Zachary Kasperek, MD

Chief of Emergency Medicine Services at UPMC East and UPMC McKeesport

Dr. Kasperek received his medical degree from SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, followed by an emergency medicine residency at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Kasperek has been in practice since 2013.

Keith Murray, MD

Chief of Emergency Services at UPMC Somerset

Dr. Murray received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Nevada, his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed his Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Chicago. Dr. Murray has been in practice since 2010.

Charissa Pacella, MD

Dr. Pacella also serves as professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Operations Department for UPMC Emergency Medicine. She earned her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She completed a residency in emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.

Thomas Justin Pirosko, DO

Dr. Pirosko received his Doctor of Osteopathy from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at Washington Hospital. He has been in practice since 2008.

Jeffrey Rixe, MD

Chief of Emergency Medicine Services at UPMC Shadyside

Dr. Rixe earned his medical degree from Pennsylvania State University and completed a residency in emergency medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Rixe is board-certified in emergency medicine and has been practicing since 2018.

Joe Suyama, MD

Donald M. Yealy, MD, FACEP

Distinguished Professor (tenured) of Emergency Medicine, Medicine, and Clinical and Translational Sciences, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

Dr. Yealy earned his undergraduate degree from Villanova University in 1981 and his medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in 1985. He completed his residency and a clinical research fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

 As chief medical officer and senior vice president, Dr. Yealy oversees the development of unified bylaw, policies, and procedures, and guides senior physician leaders to integrate care across all UPMC sites. He directs wellness and advance practice provider (APP) oversight efforts, and he sits on the boards of four UPMC hospitals. Dr. Yealy led the UPMC health system’s COVID-19 efforts, enabling our providers to serve communities with outstanding care and offer new insights to guide the region and the country.

 Dr. Yealy is “the voice” of UPMC to the public through his participation in press conferences and numerous other local, regional, national, and international media requests. He frequently shares his expertise with local, state, and federal officials.

In his more than 400 scientific publications, he was lead or senior author on NIH-funded studied of airway management, acute pneumonia, acute heart failure, pulmonary embolism, and sepsis care. Dr. Yealy is editor-in-chief of Annals of Emergency Medicine, edited seven scientific textbooks (including best-selling texts in emergency medicine and in trauma care), and serves as a referee for 20 scientific journals. His work has helped change clinical care for many life-threatening conditions, and his publications have influenced national recommendations and have been cited thousands of times.

Dr. Yealy is a member of the National Academy of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, a rare distinction.

Richard J. Wadas, MD, FACEP, FAEMS

Professor of Emergency Medicine and Clinical and Translational Sciences 
University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

Dr. Wadas attended UMDNJ – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and completed his emergency medicine residency at the University Health Center of Pittsburgh.

He is board-certified in emergency medicine, sub-specialty board-certified in emergency medical services, and holds an academic appointment at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is also the Associate Director of the Advanced Airway Management Course at the Peter Winter Institute for Simulation, Education, Research, and Research (WISER).

Dr. Wadas joined UPMC Emergency Medicine in 2001 as a staff physician at UPMC Passavant and also served as Director of Emergency Medicine at Jameson Hospital. He has most recently held the position of Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at UPMC Shadyside. In addition to this, he maintains his position as the Associate Regional Medical Director for the Emergency Medical Services Institute.

Clifton Callaway, MD, PhD

Dr. Callaway earned his medical degree from the University of California. He completed a residency in emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Callaway studies resuscitation medicine with a special emphasis on brain injury after cardiac arrest. He has developed a translational research program devoted to the topic of resuscitation from sudden death. Emphasizing the continuity of care during resuscitation, Dr. Callaway has collaborated with prehospital care providers and emergency physicians to study acute cardiac interventions, developed a platform to study intensive care interventions, and worked with partners in rehabilitation to study long-term outcomes after cardiac arrest.

His work in prehospital care has led to studies about acute monitoring and regionalization of care, and his work with emergency providers has stimulated interest in provider safety and wellness, particularly related to shift-work and sleep deprivation. Basic laboratory investigations support and are informed by this clinical work. 

Adam Ranalli, MBA

Adam directs strategic decision-making, policy development, and policy implementation for the Department of Emergency Medicine and Urgent Care. He earned a Master in Business Administration from Waynesburg University and a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University.

Charissa Pacella, MD

Dr. Pacella earned her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She completed a residency in emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh.

Paul E. Phrampus, MD, FACEP

Vice Chair of Quality and Safety for UPMC Emergency Medicine

Dr. Phrampus earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. He completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. He is board certified in emergency medicine.

Joe Suyama, MD, FACEP

Joe Suyama, MD, is a professor with the University of Pittsburgh Department of Emergency Medicine. He currently serves as the Chief of Emergency Services at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital. Dr. Suyama performs research on the health and safety of first responders, and also on obstetrical and medical conditions affecting women with high risk psychosocial, behavioral, and medical profiles. Within the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Suyama has encouraged the growth and implementation of disaster training and education for medical students by coordinating and establishing courses dealing with emerging infectious diseases, the medical consequences of complex emergencies, hospital pandemic response, Basic Disaster Life Support, and advanced clinical skills for disaster response. Dr. Suyama recently served as co-chair of the UPMC Pandemic Flu Task Force and assisted in preparedness and response efforts to confront the medical consequences of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. Dr. Suyama also serves as the medical branch director for the Corporate Emergency Coordination Center of UPMC.

Rickquel Tripp, MD

Dr. Tripp is an emergency medicine physician and has served as Vice Chair of Diversity and Inclusion with UPMC Medical Education. She earned her medical degree from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Tripp completed an emergency medicine residency at the University of Chicago and an emergency medical services fellowship through UPMC.

Anthony Pizon, MD

Dr. Pizon is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and has served as Professor and Fellowship Director for the Division of Medical Toxicology for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Toledo College of Medicine. Christian Martin Gill, MD, MPH

Dr. Martin-Gill is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and has served as the EMS Fellowship Director for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Dr. Martin-Gill completed an emergency medicine residency and an emergency medical services fellowship through the University of Pittsburgh.
