As an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) subspecialist gastroenterologist with an interest in clinical research, Dr. Swoger directs the IBD clinical trials unit at UPMC.. He conducts clinical research on the treatment of post-operative Crohn's disease, adverse events related to medications, and the natural history of IBD, and is involved in multiple industry sponsored clinical trials of new medication options.
He is currently serving as Associate Program Director of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at the University of Pittsburgh and his IBD research has been published widely. Dr. Swoger is also very active in the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), and is a member of both its patient education committee and its clinical research alliance.
Dr. Swoger attended Georgetown University, and then earned his Master’s of Public Health (epidemiology) from The University of Illinois at Chicago and his medical degree at Eastern Virginia Medical School. He completed his internal medicine residency at The Cleveland Clinic and gastroenterology fellowship training at The Mayo Clinic.
