WHAT: UPMC St. Margaret provides a free monthly support group for those living with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Participants can learn ways to improve their quality of life while getting support from others with the disease. Each month, guest speakers discuss various topics of interest to patients with COPD and their family members.

To register for this support group, go to UPMC.com/Classes or call 412-784-5764.

WHY: COPD is a lung disease categorized by airflow obstruction that affects an estimated 11 million people in the U.S. alone. The disease affects people in a variety of forms including emphysema — when the air sacs of the lungs become damaged and cause shortness of breath — and chronic bronchitis — a disorder of the large airways of the lungs known to cause coughs and sputum production. Living with these symptoms can impact one’s quality of life and having a support system can be highly beneficial.

WHO: People living with COPD.

WHEN: 3 to 4:30 p.m., the third Thursday of the month. (No Meetings will be held in Jan., Feb., March, Nov., Dec.)

WHERE: UPMC St. Margaret, Conference Center A, Ground Floor, 815 Freeport Rd., Pittsburgh, 15215.

Note to Media: To cover this event, pre-arrangements must be made by contacting Stephanie Stanley at StanleySL@upmc.edu or 412-586-9762.
