WHAT: Every day two women die in the United States following childbirth, and an additional 1,000 women are affected every week by severe complications during delivery, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. Maternal morbidity affects approximately 52,000 women each year.

To combat these alarming statistics, a UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital symposium will promote postpartum health awareness and the importance of the “fourth trimester” among providers and clinicians. The fourth trimester of care — or the first year postpartum — is crucial to reducing maternal morbidity and mortality.
