WHAT: The Mario Lemieux Foundation has once again pledged support for UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, this time through a $5 million gift for groundbreaking immunotherapy research and treatment. The new Mario Lemieux Immunotherapy Center at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center will expand and enhance innovative immunotherapy treatment options for patients with certain types of solid tumors, both through innovative research and personalized patient care. The Mario Lemieux Foundation is responsible for providing funds that developed both the Lemieux Center for Blood Cancers at UPMC Hillman and the Lemieux Lymphoma Center for Children and Young Adults at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh

WHY: UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is accelerating breakthroughs in cancer research and bringing that expertise into clinical practice around the world. It is one of the largest integrated cancer networks in the United States, with more than 60 cancer centers in western Pennsylvania, Ohio and internationally. It also is the region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The development of a specialized center to elevate the focus on immunotherapy is the logical next step.
