PITTSBURGH, Aug. 30, 2016UPMC St. Margaret provided $21 million in IRS-defined “community benefits” last year, an average of more than $57,500 a day for programs and services to improve the health and quality of life of all the communities UPMC St. Margaret serves. The $21 million total includes:

• $11.8 million in charity care and unreimbursed amounts for programs for the poor
• $2.5 million in community health programs and donations
• $6.7 million in medical research and education

UPMC St. Margaret’s contributions were part of UPMC’s $892 million in total community benefits the health system provided during fiscal year 2015 and published recently in the Community Benefits Report 2015-2016. The report shows UPMC provided nearly 70 percent of western Pennsylvania’s charity care, which is more than double all other hospitals combined, and far exceeds UPMC’s 40 percent share of hospital patients in the region.

UPMC’s $892 million in total community benefits includes:

• $313 million in charity care and unreimbursed amounts for programs for the poor
• $217 million in community health programs and donations
• $362 million for medical research and education

“The UPMC St. Margaret team of health care providers are proud to be a integral part of our community, as evident in the care and relationships that you see every day in the hospital, clinics and outpatient treatment centers,” said Dave Patton, president, UPMC St. Margaret.

Among the services offered to the community by UPMC St. Margaret are senior health and education programs, community flu vaccines, transportation services, free medication programs,  various support groups for diabetes and stroke patients, and free community access to the Neil Van Horn Pavilion Medical Library.

UPMC St. Margaret also fulfills the UPMC teaching mission in both nursing and medicine. The School of Nursing has graduated more than 3,000 nurses, and the American Nurses Credentialing Center has awarded the hospital Magnet recognition for excellence in nursing and leadership. The hospital’s family residency program, which began in 1971, continues to produce graduates who practice in the Pittsburgh area and beyond. The Geriatric Fellowship Program remains one of a select few in the nation to train providers in caring for seniors.

UPMC St. Margaret has a powerful effect on the local economy with a total annual economic impact of nearly $483 million.
