PITTSBURGH, Aug. 28, 2012 – Marshall W. Webster, M.D., a long-time physician and executive leader at UPMC, is stepping down from his current role as executive vice president of UPMC, president of the Physician Services Division (PSD) and president of the University of Pittsburgh Physicians (UPP). Steven D. Shapiro, M.D., chief medical and scientific officer at UPMC, will assume leadership of the division.

“Marshall’s contribution to the success of UPMC is extraordinary and distinctive, and I am most pleased he will continue to serve on the cutting edge of building a regional health delivery system,” said Jeffrey A. Romoff, president and CEO of UPMC. As a senior vice president of UPMC, Dr. Webster will focus on matters related to physician recruitment and practices, cultivating physician relationships, and enhancing collaboration with community hospitals.

Dr. Shapiro will now lead the Physician Services Division and the University of Pittsburgh Physicians as an executive vice president of UPMC along with his overarching responsibility as chief medical and scientific officer, a role he's held since 2010. Dr. Shapiro works with colleagues across UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences to support UPMC's strategic pillars of good science, smart technology and accountable care to assure the highest quality at the least cost. “This work will truly define the future of medicine,” Romoff said. “And given UPMC's top-quality medical leadership, we are well-positioned to address the considerable challenges ahead.”

Dr. Webster served as president of UPP, the clinical practice plan of the Pitt School of Medicine clinical faculty, and president of PSD since its inception in 2002. A professor of surgery, he is a past president of the medical staff of UPMC Presbyterian, past director of the general surgery residency program, and former chief of vascular surgery at UPMC. Dr. Webster received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, completed an internship at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and a surgical residency at Pitt.

Dr. Shapiro has served as senior vice president and chief medical and scientific officer at UPMC since 2010. During his first five years at UPMC and Pitt, he served as professor and chair of the Department of Medicine. Previously, he was the Parker B. Francis Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is a physician-scientist who remains active clinically and at the bench. His research is focused on novel molecular pathways of inflammation, tissue destruction and host defense in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, infectious diseases, vascular disease and lung cancer. Dr. Shapiro obtained his medical degree from the University of Chicago, and completed an internal medicine residency, chief residency, and fellowship in respiratory and critical care at the Washington University School of Medicine.
