PITTSBURGH, July 10, 2017 – UPMC has been named one of the nation’s “Most Wired” health systems by the American Hospital Association’s (AHA’s) Health Forum, continuing the health system’s 19-year run on the annual list.
The survey measures information technology use and adoption among hospitals nationwide and examines how they are leveraging technology—including data analytic tools, telehealth systems and remote monitoring—to improve performance and value for patients. The 2017 results are based on a survey completed by almost 700 participants, representing 2,158 hospitals, or almost 40 percent of those in the U.S.

“With the growth of cloud computing, the rise of machine learning and continual improvements in consumer-focused health care applications and devices, it has never been more important or more challenging to stay on the cutting edge of technological innovation,” said UPMC Chief Information Officer Ed McCallister. “We’re pleased to be recognized again for our efforts to enable world-class care and insurance products through the smart use of technology.”
Over the past five years, UPMC has invested more than $1.5 billion in technology to support clinical excellence and administrative efficiency. UPMC is one of the nation’s earliest and most sophisticated users of electronic medical records (EMRs). More than a dozen UPMC hospitals, as well as UPMC outpatient facilities, are at the highest levels of EMR use, as measured by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Analytics.
