‘My Spirit Wasn’t Broken’: Trauma Survivors and Care Teams Gather at UPMC Williamsport to Reflect on Recovery

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Trauma survivors, their families, and the health care teams who supported their recovery gathered at UPMC Williamsport for the third annual Trauma Survivors Reception, an evening focused on reflection, recognition, and connection for individuals whose lives were changed by serious injury and the teams who helped guide their recovery.

“In trauma, we meet people on some of the worst days of their lives. We don’t always get to see what happens next, but tonight, we do,” said Ronen Elefant, M.D., medical director, Trauma, and chief, Acute Care Surgery, UPMC in North Central Pa. “We see strength, progress, and people reclaiming their lives.”

Throughout the evening, speakers reflected on the impact of trauma care, from the immediacy of life-saving interventions to the long-term journey of recovery that continues well beyond a hospital stay including critical care, inpatient rehabilitation, therapy, pastoral care teams, and more.

At one point in the evening, Cara Geary, a trauma survivor, not only shared her impactful experience, but also stood up from her wheelchair for the room. Everyone in attendance gave her a standing ovation in return – not only symbolizing a job well done but literally to stand with her in solidarity.

“I worked harder than I ever had to before to get to this moment. I still have a long way to go – recovery is a daily choice to keep going,” said Cara. “Standing here now is my way of saying that my spirit wasn’t broken.”

Kristy Teisher, LCSW, expert discharge planning manager, Trauma, and coordinator, Trauma Survivors Network, UPMC Williamsport, recognized the growing community of trauma survivors and families connected through the event. Participants also learned about the continued growth of the Trauma Survivors Network – the launch of a peer visitation program earlier this year that connects former patients with individuals currently recovering in the hospital.

The trauma program also recognized individuals whose dedication has made a meaningful difference in patient care for the first time in the event’s history. The Excellence in Trauma Care Award, selected by both survivors and staff, was presented to Erin Holmes, PA-C, Acute Care Surgery, UPMC Williamsport, for her compassionate approach and steadfast advocacy for patients navigating recovery.

The Heart of Healing Award was also presented by UPMC to honor a family affected by a traumatic event, recognizing the vital role loved ones play in supporting patients throughout recovery.

“This is not just about what happens in the trauma bay or operating room,” said Dr. Elefant. “It’s about the entire system of care — and the people behind it — working together to support patients and families every step of the way.”

UPMC Williamsport is the region’s designated level II trauma center, providing advanced care to patients across north central Pennsylvania. Programs like the Trauma Survivors Reception and Trauma Survivors Network aim to strengthen long-term support for survivors while reinforcing connections between patients, families, and care teams.
