WHAT: The University of Pittsburgh will host a day-long conference about the opioid epidemic and the high cost of some pharmaceuticals, as well as the ethical challenges of tailoring medications to genetics. Speakers from academic institutions across the nation will be featured. They will present on opioid management best practices and there will be open discussions for health professionals in the audience to share their experiences.
Some session topics include pain management, alternative medications, Pennsylvania’s medical marijuana law, challenges for opioid-addicted moms and combatting high drug prices. Registration is required. To view the full program and to register, visit the Dealing With Drugs Conference website.
WHY: Last year, there were more than 66,000 opioid-related deaths, and some estimates predict opioids could kill half a million individuals over the next decade.
