PITTSBURGH, June 27, 2014 – UPMC is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a robust, patient-focused transition plan that addresses the expiration of the Highmark-UPMC contracts on December 31, 2014. Working together, Governor Corbett, Attorney General Kane, Insurance Commissioner Consedine, Secretary of Health Wolf, Highmark and UPMC have achieved their shared goal of ensuring a smooth transition that’s in the best interest of consumers and brings to a close this sometimes acrimonious dispute.
Patients are and always have been UPMC’s top priority. This plan puts the people of western Pennsylvania first by establishing protocols to minimize disruptions in care. It also provides patients, subscribers, employers and the community with the ability to definitively plan for the new and vibrant environment in which UPMC and Highmark – along with the national insurers – will compete on the basis of quality, cost and availability of medical services. UPMC looks forward to building on this collaborative momentum.
