I found out I had breast cancer 15 years ago. There's a strong history in my family. My mom had liver cancer and my dad had a hard time with her diagnosis and treatment. It made me hesitant to tell them about my own diagnosis. At first, when I had my radiation, I told my parents that I was away on a business trip so that they wouldn't be worried. My husband would take my son to my parents' house and I would call them pretending to be out of town.
My oncologist offered so much support during my treatment. He is wonderful—I can't say enough about him. Sometimes, during my treatment, I would almost feel embarrassed. I didn't want anyone to see me and I felt unsure of how my body would change. But, the caring staff helped me see the positive in a negative situation.
Everyone was so compassionate. From the receptionists to the nurses, everyone was helpful and friendly, with such a positive attitude. I think that really made the difference.
Now that I'm in remission, I spend time with my family and I travel as much as possible. I was a flight attendant for 31 years, so I enjoy getting away to the beach or even traveling internationally. I also spend a lot of time at my local YMCA. We're a tight-knit community that looks out for each other; they're like my second family. Because of my successful treatment, I look forward to supporting them as they've supported me.
