Diagnosing Breast Cancer at UPMC in Central Pa.

If an initial screening exam reveals an abnormal mass (growth) in your breast, you will need further testing to determine if the mass is something simple such as a benign cyst, or a more serious malignancy (cancer) that requires treatment.

UPMC’s Breast Care Center in Central Pa. uses the latest technology and procedures to deliver quick, accurate results for women with abnormal breast masses. These include mammogram, tomosynthesis (3D mammogram), breast ultrasound, and breast MRI, offered through the Women’s Imaging Center at UPMC in Central Pa., as well as the full spectrum of breast biopsy options.

If the mass is found to be cancer, it will be staged (categorized) into one of five groups. This information helps our specialists develop an effective treatment plan, using proven medical therapies, procedures and technology, to help you achieve the best possible outcome.

At UPMC's Breast Care Center in Central Pa., we understand that breast cancer is a life changing diagnosis that can affect you and your family emotionally, physically, financially and socially.
