How Does Alissa Help Pediatric Patients?
Alissa Bergstresser is a pediatric surgery nurse practitioner at UPMC Children’s in Central Pa. She cares for pediatric patients (ages 0-18) requiring general pediatric surgery, which includes surgical diagnoses of the chest, abdomen, pelvis, and skin. Most of her time is spent at UPMC Harrisburg in the inpatient unit, working closely with nursing and families throughout the family’s surgical journey.
“I spend time with families to make sure they have a complete understanding of their child's diagnosis and treatment and perform procedures as needed,” she says.
She makes sure the discharge process is robust and complete, allowing for a seamless transition to home and outpatient care.
Why Does Alissa Come to Work Every Day?
“I come to work every day to make a difference in the lives of the children of central Pennsylvania. I love being a part of identifying a treatable problem, implementing that treatment, and watching the child improve. I pride myself on providing true patient/family-centered care, listening to each patient's unique needs, adjusting care plans to be developmentally appropriate, and providing a listening ear, reassurance, and education to families. I love being part of safe, standardized, expert pediatric surgical care and continuously elevating the experience of each patient. If I can improve the care or outcome of even a single patient, my workday was time well spent!”
