Kai was a happy nine-month-old baby, playing and smiling; however, on his mother’s birthday in 2022, his parents noticed some symptoms indicating he was in pain. Symptoms grew and later led to lethargy and vomiting. Briana and Rob, Kai’s parents, rushed him to UPMC Hanover’s emergency department, where things changed very quickly – and significantly.
Alissa Bergstresser is a pediatric surgery nurse practitioner at UPMC Children’s in Central Pa. She cares for pediatric patients (ages 0-18) requiring general pediatric surgery, which includes surgical diagnoses of the chest, abdomen, pelvis, and skin. Most of her time is spent at UPMC Harrisburg in the inpatient unit, working closely with nursing and families throughout the family’s surgical journey.
Doug Mizic is part of a highly specialized team that cares for patients ranging from fragile preterm newborns needing NICU support to critically ill or injured children requiring pediatric ICU-level care while in transport between hospitals. Functioning as a mobile intensive care unit, the team cares for patients with respiratory distress, congenital anomalies, cardiac conditions, sepsis, surgical emergencies, and more.
