  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • Sudden confusion
  • Trouble speaking or understanding
  • Sudden trouble seeing
  • Sudden trouble walking
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of balance or coordination

Education

The UPMC Stroke Institute is committed to reducing the impact of a stroke by increasing awareness through community health screenings, education events, and staff education.

A team approach to care

Board-certified neurologists, stroke specialists, and emergency medicine specialists lead a multispecialty team that provides care for stroke patients.

Advanced treatment

The blood clot-dissolving drug tPA can be given intravenously, within four-and-a-half hours after the first sign of symptoms. Intra-arterial tPA or mechanical thrombectomy — advanced treatments available at the UPMC Stroke Institute — can be administered to select patients within eight to ten hours after symptoms begin.
