At UPMC, our commitment to providing culturally competent care means we understand that knowledge and responsiveness to diverse languages, communication patterns, and health belief systems are key to our ability to take accurate medical histories, make diagnoses, and ensure our patient and member understanding and treatment adherence to promote healthy lifestyles.
It also means we equip our staff with the tools and resources needed to provide quality services to new and existing members with widely varying needs.
UPMC was one of two organizations that received the Catalyst award in 2023.
This premier gender equity award for advocates of diversity, equity, and inclusion recognizes organizations whose influential and pioneering initiatives accelerate and advance women and people of color into leadership roles.
A key success from our nomination was our five-year workforce demographic goal to increase representation of people of color and women in executive roles from 2016 to 2021. UPMC increased representation of people of color in executive roles by 96% and women in executive roles by 19%.
For two years in a row, UPMC claimed ownership of the #1 spot in the Diversity MBA “50 Out Front: Best Companies for Women & Diverse Managers” rankings, first earning the honor in 2019. In 2021, UPMC ranked #2, holding one of the top five spots for three years in a row.
Key elements used to determine the rankings are representation, recruitment, workplace inclusion, retention, succession planning, and accountability.
Retaining a spot in the top five can be attributed to UPMC's outstanding commitment to fostering a diverse workforce and leadership team.
The Human Rights Campaign Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) is an annual survey that evaluates health care facilities on policies and practices dedicated to the equitable treatment and inclusion of their LGBTQ patients, visitors, and employees. The Human Rights Campaign Foundation is the largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people. LGBTQ individuals often experience discrimination and other challenges because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
UPMC Health Plan and Community Care Behavioral Health have again earned the highest score possible and a “Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality” honor in 2021 from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.
This marks the third consecutive year that UPMC Health Plan and the second consecutive year that Community Care received the HRC Foundation’s “Best Places to Work for LGBTQ+ Equity” and reflects UPMC’s stated values of “Dignity & Respect” for all LGBTQ+ employers and members. Across UPMC, 26 facilities have been recognized by the HRC Foundation for LGBTQ+ policies.
UPMC was recognized by the National Diversity Council’s Healthcare Diversity Council as one of only three health care organizations recognized nationally for creating or spearheading innovative diversity initiatives that establish and foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment, participating and/or organizing programs that benefit and involve the community, exhibiting and demonstrating commitment to the highest ethical standards, integrity, and professional excellence, and committing to the recruitment, training, development, and retention of individuals from all populations.
In partnership with the National Diversity Council, UPMC was proud to host the 2021 National Healthcare DEI Conference.
UPMC was selected as a Vibrant Index 5.0 Champion in 2024 and has received top ranking since the Vibrant Index survey began in 2019.
