erUPMC and its partners, the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the Center for Emergency Medicine of Western Pennsylvania, are among the United States' top programs, having received recognition nationwide for emergency medicine work in research, education, critical care transport, and clinical care.

The Emergency Department at UPMC Presbyterian, an adult medical/surgical tertiary referral hospital in Pittsburgh, is a full-scale Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center with expertise in a variety of acute medical conditions.

UPMC’s emergency capabilities stretch from this Level 1 center to Level 3 centers at other facilities in UPMC’s network of 20 hospitals. UPMC also provides training for emergency services and first responders so that world-class care reaches the patient even before arrival at the Emergency Department.

UPMC has exported its emergency medicine expertise by partnering in 2006 with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in Doha, Qatar, to enhance emergency care for the citizens and residents of Qatar. Hamad Medical Corporation and UPMC have formed this partnership to evaluate, improve, and achieve excellence in emergency care for the citizens and residents of the State of Qatar.

The four-year partnership ended in 2010. HMC hospitals now provide emergency medical care to more than 700,000 people annually. UPMC also helped launch trauma services at Hamad General Hospital, and it is now one of the busiest trauma centers in the world, admitting 3,500 patients annually. UPMC physicians and nurses provided hands-on training in emergency medicine and worked side-by-side with their local counterparts to provide world-class emergency care
