Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione (ISMETT)

The Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione (ISMETT) in Palermo is a joint public-private partnership between UPMC, the Region of Sicily, and Civico and Cervello hospitals. Since its establishment in 1997, ISMETT has become one of the leading transplant centers and specialty hospitals in Europe, performing more than 2,000 transplants to date. Its specialists work closely with UPMC’s world-renowned transplantation teams and are supported by advanced diagnostic services, offering patients the most sophisticated therapies available.

ISMETT also provides specialized surgical, radiologic, and endoscopic procedures for patients with complex diseases. Exploring clinical treatment alternatives to transplantation ensures that the most sophisticated therapies are available to our patients.

UPMC and ISMETT together also support biomedical research projects, such as The Cell Factory. The Cell Factory consists of three laboratories dedicated to the production of cells to treat end-stage organ failure. Projects such as these are helping to fuel scientific and medical excellence in southern Italy.
