Through a partnership with the Region of Sicily, UPMC offers transplant services at the Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione (ISMETT) in Palermo. Over the years, ISMETT has become one of the leading transplant centers in Europe.
UPMC also works with ISMETT to support biomedical research, one of which is a project called The Cell Factory. The Cell Factory performs advanced research in regenerative medicine and offers remote cell preparation for other transplantation centers in Europe. This partnership includes three laboratories dedicated to the production of cells to treat end-stage organ failure.
UPMC partnered with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the Italian government through the Ri.MED Foundation to build and manage a Biomedical Research and Biotechnology Center (BRBC), also located in Palermo. This center offers some of the most contemporary themes in biomedical research including drug discovery, vaccine development, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. The center is also focused on the development of biomedical devices, structural and computational biology, neurosciences, and molecular imaging and continuously looks to enhance its team with creative and innovative scientists and researchers.
