Investing in Our Communities

As the largest nongovernmental employer in Pennsylvania, UPMC contributed more than $50 billion to the state’s economy in 2023. In addition to our 100,000 employees, we are continually investing in our communities and helping to create jobs. Our economic impact includes:

  • Accounting for more than a quarter of the statewide economic impact of Pennsylvania hospitals.
  • Supporting nearly 184,000 total jobs directly and indirectly (estimated).
  • Adding approximately 5,200 new union jobs during hospital construction projects.
  • Providing $324 million in diversity spending in 2023.
