UPMC contributes more than half of all hospital funded research in Pennsylvania, directly investing $373 million in 2020. These investments advance medical research and help attract top-notch physicians and researchers to our communities.
In March 2020, a UPMC virology team developed a COVID-19 test that returns results in 24 hours — enabling UPMC to open specimen collection sites across the system.
In April 2020, UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh announced a potential vaccine for COVID-19. Researchers were able to act quickly, building on previous experience with closely related viruses.
To ensure no UPMC Health Plan member faces a financial barrier to receiving needed testing, UPMC waived any applicable deductibles, copayments, or other cost-sharing for COVID-19 testing and in-network, inpatient COVID-19 treatment.
Great careers in health care start with great educations. UPMC is a leader in funding education for health professionals in Pennsylvania. In 2019, we invested $204 million to develop physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care providers.
