The Medical Staff Services department is the hospital's first line in ensuring patient safety and high-quality care. The department is responsible for credentialing and re-credentialing health care practitioners, such as physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and CRNAs. Credentialing involves assessing candidates who wish to practice medicine, which includes verifying their identity, education, and licenses to practice in the state. Additionally, the department investigates any malpractice claims against these practitioners to ensure that all UPMC providers are highly qualified and competent to deliver optimal patient care.
Following credentialing, practitioners must apply for privileges to treat specific conditions or perform certain procedures. The process of determining a practitioner's competency to perform these activities is known as privileging. This process requires close monitoring at each institution, as applicants must demonstrate their training, education, experience, and current competence for the requested privileges.
