On our journey to create and sustain a culture of nursing excellence at UPMC, we embrace the philosophy of inclusion.
Diversity is a key component of the philosophy of inclusion. For years, UPMC has recognized the importance of a multicultural nursing workforce that reflects the ethnic and cultural patient populations served.

Minority Nurse Mentorship and Professional
Enhancement Program
The UPMC Minority Nurse Mentorship and Professional Enhancement Program was created with a mission to identify, retain, and enhance the professional development of minority nurses at the bedside and in leadership roles within UPMC. Its goals include:
- Increase the recruitment of new minority nurses
- Lengthen the tenure of our current minority nurses
- Showcase leadership development opportunities for minority nurses
- Assist with the recruitment, retention, and graduation of minority students in the schools of nursing at UPMC
This program recognizes the importance of shared governance through the Minority Nurse Advisory Board.
Minority Nurse Advisory Board
The Minority Nurse Advisory Board was established to assist with strategic planning, decision making, and continuous improvements of the program. Membership consists of nursing representatives from various UPMC facilities along with the support of the Center for Inclusion in Health Care. Another function of the advisory board is to coordinate participation in community service initiatives. The chairman of the advisory board reports directly to UPMC's nursing leadership.
