eDermatology versus Video Visit with a Dermatologist

If you are a Pennsylvania resident, you have access to both eDermatology and video visits with a dermatology provider. A video visit connects you with a provider who can walk through your concerns in real-time. With eDermatology, you simply upload photos and a dermatology provider follow ups with a diagnosis and prescription, if necessary. Prescriptions can be sent to any pharmacy in Pennsylvania.

With a video visit, you can make a real-time video appointment with a dermatology expert.

Your doctor is able to do an exam much like they would in person. They'll be able to see and assess your skin concerns by using video and photos. Photos are required prior to the video visit.

eDermatology is for care that isn't urgent. You'll need to:

An expert from UPMC's dermatology team will reply with health advice, a diagnosis, and a treatment plan within three business days. This plan may include:

Sending a prescription to your pharmacy of choice in Pennsylvania.
Ordering lab tests.
Scheduling follow-up, if needed.

What is UPMC eDermatology?

UPMC eDermatology provides non-emergent dermatology care from our expert team of UPMC Dermatology providers. Prior to the dermatology providers reviewing your skin condition:

You will be asked about your skin concern along with questions pertaining to your medical history.
You will upload photos related to your skin condition.
You will be asked to share your health information with your provider.
The process takes about 15 minutes or less. The dermatology providers will provide you with a diagnosis and recommend a course of action within 3 business days.
For pediatric patients, proxy access is necessary for consults to be submitted and completed.

How much does UPMC eDermatology cost?

The cost of UPMC eDermatology is $75 per visit or less if you are a UPMC Health Plan member. Other than with UPMC Health Plan, UPMC Providers are not currently participating providers with respect to these telemedicine services with Medicare, Medicaid, or other third-party payers. Patients who receive services through UPMC eDermatology, who are not UPMC Health Plan members, acknowledge and agree that claims for such services will not be submitted to these payers nor will they otherwise be covered by such payers. Patients are personally responsible for any charges incurred while receiving care via UPMC eDermatology.

Do I schedule a video visit with a dermatology provider?

No, by providing images of your skin concern through eDermatology, the dermatology provider can review and diagnose your skin condition. If you prefer a video visit with a dermatology provider, please contact one of our offices to schedule an appointment.
