What is EpicCare Link?

EpicCare Link is a web-based application that provides secure access to your patients' UPMC electronic health records, test results, referral statuses, and more.

EpicCare Link provides access to your patients’ full UPMC medical record, including:

  • Lab results.
  • Diagnostic test results.
  • Hospitalization records.
  • Procedural information.
  • Discharge instructions.
  • Medications.
  • Allergies.
  • Medical history.

EpicCare Link can also be used to:

  • Request consults.
  • Place orders.
  • Request appointments.
  • View scheduled appointments for your patients with UPMC.
  • Send secure messages to providers.
  • Schedule procedures, including OR cases, GI procedures, bronchoscopies, and catheterizations.

Who is eligible for EpicCare Link access?

Examples of those who can benefit from an EpicCare Link account include:

  • Providers sending referrals to, or receiving referrals from, UPMC providers.
  • Post-acute care facilities.
  • Clinical and office support staff.
  • Independent providers who perform procedures at UPMC facilities.
  • Emergency Medical Service (EMS) providers.

  • Simple set up. This web-based application does not require additional software.
  • Care coordination. Free, secure access to your patients’ electronic medical records.
  • Online ordering and referrals. Available for providers and their designated site administrators. Order labs, radiology, and ambulatory referrals with faster result report turnaround.
  • Enhanced care coordination. Enable seamless information sharing across care teams and streamline core workflows for better patient outcomes.
  • Referral management. Simplify the referral process by allowing providers to easily send, track, and manage referrals in one central system, reducing delays and ensuring patients receive timely, personalized care.
  • Seamless data management. Leverage real-time access to patient records, including test results, referral statuses, and care summaries, to ensure continuity of care and keep all providers informed.

Frequently Asked Questions

EpicCare link is an intuitive, easy-to-use, web-based application that offers:

  • The ability to view a patient’s clinical history real-time, including test results, imaging reports, notifications of outpatient visits, admissions, and discharges.
  • Event notifications about your patients (i.e. patient’s Emergency Department visit); Providers must be identified on the patient’s registration.
  • Secure messaging to/from UPMC regarding patient care, including referral requests.

With EpicCare Link, you can view your patients' lab results, diagnostic test results and reports, hospitalization records, procedural information, discharge instructions, progress notes, medications, allergies, problem lists, medical history, and more.

Yes. Using EpicCare Link, you can access clinical data for your patients, regardless of which UPMC facility they visit.

EpicCare Link provides registered users with secure access to their patients’ electronic health record information and test results from UPMC.

EpicCare Link should be used by:

  • Staff at affiliated practices, whose providers have full Epic access
  • Providers referring to UPMC and their support staff
  • Providers who perform procedures at UPMC facilities and their support staff
  • Community-based care partners, such as:
    • Emergency medical service (EMS) providers
    • Nursing homes
    • Long-term care facilities

To become a registered user and entity, please click the Request Access button at the top of this webpage. The process entails completing an Access Agreement and User Enrollment Form.

Once the new account request is submitted, generally it takes up to two weeks to process the request. Once processed, the user’s account information will be sent to the address specified in the new account request form.

No, training is not required. However, after logging into EpicCare Link, you will be provided access to online videos and tipsheets on the UPMC EpicCare Link home page. EpicCare Link was designed so that community providers and staff need minimal training to use it successfully. Users are trained with onscreen instructions and tips that guide users through their workflows the first time they access certain activities.

No, there is no fee associated with EpicCare Link. If you decide you would like to purchase UPMC’s full Epic system for use in your office, a fee would be incurred.

To access EpicCare Link you need a computer, a high-speed internet connection and an up-to-date browser (e.g., Microsoft Edge, Chrome, etc.). You may access EpicCare Link via a tablet (e.g., iPad), but access via a Smartphone is not recommended as it is not optimized for smaller screens. Please know that EpicCare Link uses industry standard encryption technology.

UPMC requires every site using EpicCare Link to assign a Site Administrator. This Site Administrator will have abilities to reset passwords and more. For any access issues please contact your Site Administrator.

If your Site Administrator cannot assist or resolve the issue they have direct access to the EpicCare Link System Administrator and your site administrator should call 412-647-4357. 

If you have access to EpicCare Link as a part of your job, it is so you can perform your duties in support of caring for patients. When you agree to the terms and conditions of using EpicCare Link, you agree to keep this information private and not allow anyone else to use this information.

You are responsible for any activity that occurs using your username and password. Even if you are called away from your computer and someone else is active with this information, you are responsible. If others in your clinic or department need EpicCare Link access, they can request their own account by contacting their EpicCare Link Site Administrator.
