Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC has the experience and expertise to help patients maximize their healthy lifestyle. Magee is the only program in the region to have all experts credentialed as Certified Menopause Practitioners through the North American Menopause Society (NAMS).

Dr. Volkar earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia and completed her residency at Abington Health in Abington, Pa. Dr. Volkar practiced for many years in Johnstown, Pa. before becoming a North American Menopause Society Certified Practitioner and transitioning to the Cleveland Clinic, where she was the lead gynecologist in the menopausal center. Along with her clinical credentials, she also holds an MBA in Healthcare Management and is the Quality officer for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.

Dr. Imro earned her undergraduate degree from John Carroll University. After graduation, she performed research for several years at Vanderbilt University and the University of Pittsburgh. She went on to attend Hahnemann University in Philadelphia for medical school.


Dr. Imro completed her training in obstetrics and gynecology at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa. She is a certified menopause practitioner and has a special interest in helping women in the early stages of menopause, as well as those experiencing sexual issues in the menopausal transition and beyond.

Dr. Peterson earned her nursing degree from the University of Pittsburgh. After practicing as a nurse for 3 years, she went to the University of Virginia for Medical School and then to the Medical College of Virginia for residency in Ob/Gyn. She was in private practice for a number of years.


Dr. Peterson became a Certified Menopause Practitioner in 2003 and joined the Midlife Health Center in 2008. She is currently the director of the center. She enjoys helping the women of Pittsburgh navigate through the challenges of menopause.

Dr. Scruggs earned her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia and completed an internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital, now part of Virginia Commonwealth University. She was an obstetrics and gynecology general practitioner in Tennessee for 17 years prior to joining UPMC.


Dr. Scruggs has been a North American Menopause Society Certified Menopause Practitioner since 2003, and is the Associate Director of the Midlife Health Center at Magee.

Dr. Thurston earned her undergraduate degree in Human Biology from Stanford University, her PhD in Clinical Health Psychology from Duke University, and served as a Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholar at Harvard University. Dr. Thurston is a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh where she directs the Women’s Biobehavioral Health Laboratory, a laboratory devoted to investigating the biology and psychology of the menopause transition. Dr. Thurston is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who specializes in meeting the behavioral health needs of midlife women.


Dr. Thurston is a recipient of the Henry Burger Prize from the International Menopause Society, the Vasomotor Symptoms Research Award from the North American Menopause Society, leads the Research Affairs Committee of the North American Menopause Society, and sits on the editorial Board of Menopause, the leading journal devoted to the study of the menopause transition.
