The Lactation Center at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is a leading lactation resource for women in Pittsburgh. The Center provides education and support to mothers before birth and throughout the breastfeeding journey. From prenatal breastfeeding classes to bedside consultations, the lactation consultants support a mother’s decision to breastfeed with the latest, evidence-based information, given with a caring touch. The center also provides ongoing breastfeeding education to our medical and nursing staff.

Baby Formula Shortage: What You Should Know

FDA approved infant formulas copy some nutritional benefits of breast milk. There is a current formula shortage due to challenges with getting ingredients, packaging, labor, and shipping. Adding to those challenges is a recall of formula. No one knows how long the shortage will last, but many leaders are working to have formula available as soon as possible.

With approximately 10,000 deliveries per year, the lactation consultants at Magee are experts in teaching, counseling, and problem-solving. They recognize that women who receive support in their decision to breastfeed will nurse their babies longer and with a greater feeling of success. Each lactation consultant is board-certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and has extensive experience working with mothers and babies.

Our Availability

The Lactation Center provides breastfeeding assistance to mothers while still in the hospital.

The Center’s retail, phone, virtual, and outpatient services are available to any mother, regardless of if they delivered at Magee or another facility.
