The Breastfeeding Basics Class is taught by a certified breastfeeding counselor and focuses on the benefits of breastfeeding for mothers and babies, the importance of skin-to-skin and rooming-in, identifying baby's feeding cues, maintaining a milk supply, and other practical information. Additional topics include combining breastfeeding and working, expression and storage of breast milk, and use of breast pumps. Expectant fathers are encouraged to attend.
The Breastfeeding Support Group is facilitated by a certified breastfeeding counselor and free to all breastfeeding moms. Group members are invited to share difficulties and successes and offer support to other attendees.
This 2½ hour non-certification focuses on adult/child/infant CPR and techniques to use on a person who is choking. Labor and Delivery nurses facilitate this course, which is presented in a practice-while-watching format. A Family & Friends CPR participation card is included on the back cover of the student manual that you will receive. Once registered, if you are unable to attend, please give our office a courtesy at 717-849-5594. No refund will be issued to "no-shows".
This free, single evening class focuses on the experience of the grandparent. New trends in medical practices and current recommendations for infant care and safety will be discussed. Suggestions on how grandparents can support the new family and play a valuable role in the lives of their grandchildren will be shared.
A tour of UPMC Memorial's Labor and Delivery Department is offered following the class. Participation in the tour is optional.
A free tour of the Labor and Delivery Department provides the expectant mother and father/support person an opportunity to become familiar with UPMC Memorial and get answers to any questions you may have. You may tour the department at any phase of your pregnancy.

If you have questions about having a baby, you are not alone. At UPMC Memorial, we offer classes throughout the year to prepare you and your family for the birth of your baby. Our instructors are certified childbirth educators and maternity nurses committed to individualized support for each and every prospective parent. This class encourages your active participation during pregnancy, birth, and the first few weeks at home. The classes include education on the roles of the mother and her support person during labor and the delivery of both vaginal and cesarean births, types of anesthesia available, breast feeding, newborn care, and care of the new mother during the post-partum period. This free class is designed for children two to five years old who are about to become big brothers or sisters. Children will learn about newborns and how to interact with them. Some safety lessons will be shared. There will be a celebration of their role as big brothers and big sisters. A short tour of the Labor and Delivery Department is included. Classes are held monthly.
