PITTSBURGH, Feb. 3, 2016 – The UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute, in partnership with the American Heart Association, will offer a variety of screenings and events throughout the month of February in recognition of Heart Month and National Wear Red Day. All events aim to raise awareness for the fight against cardiovascular disease in women.

As the leading cause of death among women in the United States, cardiovascular disease is responsible for the deaths of 400,000 women annually. Heart attacks, stroke, arrhythmias and heart valve problems are just some of the many conditions that compose cardiovascular disease. While one-third of women’s deaths each year are caused by cardiovascular disease, 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented through proper education and lifestyle changes.
