UPMC Horizon provided
$14 million in IRS-defined “community benefits” last year, an
average of more than $38,000 a day for programs and services to improve the health and quality of life of all the communities UPMC Horizon serves. The $14 million total includes:
• $8.3 million in charity care and unreimbursed amounts for programs for the poor
• $3.5 million in community health programs and donations
• $1.8 million in medical research and education
UPMC Horizon’s contributions were part of UPMC’s $892 million in total community benefits the health system provided during fiscal year 2015 and published recently in the
Community Benefits Report 2015-2016. The report shows UPMC provided nearly 70 percent of western Pennsylvania’s charity care, which is more than double all other hospitals combined, and far exceeds UPMC’s 40 percent share of hospital patients in the region.
UPMC’s $892 million in total community benefits includes:
• $313 million in charity care and unreimbursed amounts for programs for the poor
• $217 million in community health programs and donations
• $362 million for medical research and education
“We are committed to addressing the specific and diverse needs of our communities while advancing our clinical care throughout our region,” said Don Owrey, president, UPMC Horizon. Some examples of the community benefits UPMC Horizon provides throughout the year include various community health fairs, targeted education and health screening programs, cancer and diabetes support groups, transportation programs, EMS medical direction and education, and volunteer service and donations to various community boards and organizations.
Another community benefit is the training that UPMC Horizon provides for physicians in family medicine, orthopaedic surgery and general surgery. Many of these graduates become local doctors who give back by practicing in the community.
“We are proud of the integral role we have played and will continue to play as leaders in our community, backed by the strength of the UPMC system and our regional partnerships with UPMC Jameson and others,” Owrey added.
With campuses in Greenville and Shenango Valley, UPMC Horizon has a powerful effect on the local economy with a total annual economic impact of nearly $258 million.
