In an effort to help you and your family to be as healthy as possible, UPMC in Central Pa. sponsors a variety of community health events and activities, including screenings, classes and workshops. Check out our calendar of events for the most up to date listing and for new programs.

Surgical Education And Information

Pre-Operative Education

  • Prior to your surgery, our surgeons and staff will review the procedure with you so that you have a good understanding of what to expect. You will receive instructions on what you need to do in the days and hours leading up to your surgery. These instructions will vary depending on your individual needs and the type of surgery you are having.

Post-operative Instructions

  • Following surgery, you will receive instructions about your care. Instructions will vary depending on your particular situation. You will also be scheduled for a follow-up office visit in the weeks following your procedure.
  • If you experience any problems after surgery, please call our office at 717-231-8555 or 800-872-6000. If it is after hours, our answering service will connect you with the surgeon on call, who is available 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Powerful Hearts Support Group For Cardiac Surgery Patients

We are honored that you trusted us for your heart surgery. In order to help you along the road to recovery, patients who have had cardiac or vascular surgery with Doctors Mumtaz, Loran, Jaik or Martella, are welcome to join our Powerful Hearts support group. Each session will feature dynamic presentations by physicians, nurses, registered dietitians, exercise experts and more as well as light refreshments. The support group is a free service. Heart Failure Support Group

UPMC in Central Pa. invites you to learn more about heart failure and to share your questions, ideas and experiences with others. Each month, the Heart Failure Support Group features a new educational topic and a guest speaker, followed by an interactive discussion. Our experienced health care professionals attend each session.

Refreshments are provided. Free parking is available in the visitor's parking garage simply bring your ticket to the meeting for validation. Friends and family members are also welcome.

When: The fourth Wednesday of each month, from 2-3 p.m.

Be Smart-Shop Right: Grocery Shopping Tours

Knowing what healthy foods to buy at the supermarket and which ones to take off your shopping list is not always easy – we offer free grocery shopping tours at area food stores, led by registered dietitians and designed to teach you how to shop wisely for heart-healthy eating. Nutrition Counseling

UPMC in Central Pa.'s registered dietitians are here to help, whether you need assistance creating a high blood pressure-friendly diet or just to learn some simple heart-healthy food preparation tips. We offer a variety of nutrition services at a number of locations across Central Pennsylvania.

Cholesterol Screenings

Low-cost cholesterol screenings are offered to the public periodically at health fairs and other events supported by UPMC in Central Pa.. For the most up-to-date schedule, please see our online calendar of events. Screenings can also be arranged for organizations or businesses. They can be combined with either blood pressure and/or blood glucose screenings. For more information, please call 717-782-2736.

Stroke Education and Screenings

Free stroke screenings are offered to the public periodically at health fairs and other events supported by UPMC in Central Pa. For the most up-to-date schedule, please see our online calendar of events.

CPR Classes

Learn single-rescuer CPR and how to save a choking victim. There is a fee for this class. Please call 717-231-8900 for more information.
