Many people with breast cancer experience some sort of pain. This can be caused by the cancer itself. It could also develop after surgery, radiation therapy or chemotherapy. The pain could last for days, weeks or longer. Your pain could be constant or only occur from time to time.
The important thing to know about pain is that you don’t have to live with it.
If you experience pain at any point during or after your breast cancer treatment, be sure to tell your UPMC Breast Care Center team. They can refer you to the pain specialists and Palliative Care Team at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center for help.
These specialists will work to understand the source of your pain. They will then develop a treatment plan to provide you with optimal relief. This plan may use medication, or it could include other methods of pain relief such as physical therapy.
Please note that it’s important to tell your care team about your pain, even if it’s not linked to your cancer. This will allow them to address it as part of your overall treatment plan.
