UPMC Recognized for Outstanding Achievements in Health Care

UPMC in north central Pa. is committed to providing the best possible care and services for our patients. These efforts have led to numerous awards and prestigious recognition over the past years.

2022

UPMC Williamsport, part of the UPMC Magee-Womens network, has been recognized as a 2022-2023 High Performing Hospital for Maternity Care (Uncomplicated Pregnancy) by U.S. News & World Report.

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Williamsport achieved the highest quality standards in radiation therapy from the American College of Radiation Oncology Practice Accreditation, assuring that the center meets vigorous and nationally accepted standards for cancer patient safety and radiation oncology care. (2022).

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Williamsport has been accredited by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer since 1981 for improving the quality of cancer care provided to patients, as validated by the national cancer database. This accreditation means that a center meets a national quality standard, establishes a framework for quality, and improves patient care (2022).

UPMC Williamsport has been selected as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement, part of the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program, by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. Facilities designated as Blue Distinction Centers® for Knee and Hip Replacement demonstrate expertise in total knee and total hip replacement surgeries, resulting in fewer patient complications and readmissions.


2021

UPMC Williamsport was recognized by The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) for stellar performance ensuring patients’ safety. The hospital is among 17 statewide to receive HAP’s Excellence in Patient Safety Recognition for 2021.

UPMC Williamsport completed successful recertification surveys from The Joint Commission for Stroke, Brain Injury, and Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation. UPMC Williamsport remains one of only four facilities in Pennsylvania to receive this certification for spinal cord injury rehabilitation, and one of only 11 for brain injury rehabilitation (2021).

UPMC Senior Communities received five-star nursing home designations from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for Cole Manor, Haven Place, and The Green Home (2021).

UPMC Lock Haven (now a UPMC Outpatient Center with a full-service outpatient emergency department) was certified by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center with a Gold Seal of Approval (2021).


UPMC Williamsport has been granted Level II Trauma Center accreditation by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF) in September 2021, recognizing a new level of care and services provided in north central Pennsylvania.

Designated a top performers of the 2021 HAP Donate Life Challenge, with UPMC in the North Central Pa. region placing second place top health system and UPMC Williamsport as second place top hospital.


2020

UPMC Cole earned an Achievement Award from The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) for its outstanding effort to improve health care in the communities it serves. UPMC Cole was just one of 12 winners chosen from 131 statewide submissions for work in community health, quality improvement, and operational efficiencies. (August 2020)

UPMC Williamsport has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Silver Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. UPMC Home Healthcare and Hospice of Central Pa., has been recognized by Strategic Healthcare Programs (SHP) as a “Superior Performer” for achieving an overall caregiver and family satisfaction score that ranked in the top 20% of all eligible SHP clients for the 2019 calendar year. (July 2020)

The Joint Commission, in conjunction with The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, recently certified UPMC Wellsboro and UPMC Muncy as Acute Stroke Ready Hospitals. (June 2020)

UPMC Wellsboro received a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, one of 455 hospitals in the U.S. and only hospital in Pennsylvania’s northern tier to receive this rating (2021). 

UPMC Williamsport earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification. UPMC Williamsport is one of only eight hospitals in the state of Pennsylvania to receive this designation. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization’s commitment to providing safe and quality patient care. (April 2020)


2019

Three UPMC laboratories were awarded accreditation by College of American Pathologists (CAP). UPMC Muncy, UPMC Williamsport and UPMC Lock Haven received notice of reaccreditation.

UPMC Wellsboro was recently recognized by the American Hospital Association (AHA) for 75 years of membership. (Nov. 2019)

UPMC in north central Pa. was recently recognized by the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP), the Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE), Gift of Life Donor Program, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) with the Titanium Health System designation in the 2019 HAP Donate Life Pennsylvania Hospital Challenge. UPMC Muncy earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Critical Access Hospital Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its health care quality and safety. (July 2019)

Rehabilitation Services earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Stroke Rehabilitation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards. Rehabilitation Services already has existing certifications from The Joint Commission for Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Injury rehabilitation. (July 2019)

The American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) re-certified UPMC Susquehanna’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation program. The program has been certified for the past six years and is one of the only certified programs in the region. Certified programs include comprehensive care models for people with cardiovascular problems (e.g., heart attacks, coronary artery bypass graft surgery) and pulmonary problems (e.g., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD], respiratory symptoms) aimed at faster recover and a healthier lifestyle. Members of the continuing care team at UPMC Wellsboro were awarded the Baronner Rural Innovation and Transformation (BRIT) Award by the Pennsylvania Office of Rural Health. The award recognizes rural hospitals and health systems that have implemented a robust and sustainable initiative to significantly impact the health status of the communities they serve. The team developed new processes and support materials to help reduce complications following discharge which historically led to readmission.

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Williamsport achieved American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO) Accreditation in Radiation Oncology. To achieve the three-year accreditation award, the facility had to undergo rigorous peer reviews, including reviews of patient care, safety practices, and technology; as well as several months of on-site visits evaluating a wide range of factors from staffing to quality assurance, safety, and work processes. UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Williamsport was awarded the 2018 Outstanding Achievement Award by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Williamsport one of a select group of 24 U.S. accredited cancer programs to receive this national honor for cancer surveys performed Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2018, and the only program to be recognized in Pennsylvania. UPMC Muncy was recognized by The National Rural Health Resource Center (The Center) and the Pennsylvania Flex Program with The Critical Access Hospital Recognition Certificate for keeping pace with health care transformation, which is imperative to sustaining access to health services for rural communities.
