My Residency Program: Transition to Practice

UPMC is proud to be a leader in nursing education and training by offering a residency program for new nurses. All newly hired graduate nurses are automatically enrolled.

The transition of graduate nurses to professional practice can be both exciting and challenging. UPMC’s My Residency program is a commitment to new nurses and is designed to support them as they make the transition from basic nursing education to nursing practice.

Nursing orientation provides a solid foundation to begin safe clinical practice. The nursing residency enables the new nurse to develop the essential skills needed to move successfully into the role of a professional nurse. The My Residency framework includes enhanced clinical skills, professional growth and development, and role socialization. Peer-to-peer interaction is an important component of the program. Most residents participate as a cohort which provides the opportunity to build relationships beyond their unit.

Curriculum

Didactic content is complemented by interactive teaching strategies, including role playing, case studies, and journaling.

My Residency core content includes:

  • End-of-life care
  • Crisis management

The core content is consistent across UPMC hospitals, with areas of focus tailored to each facility.
