The Hidden Weight: Unpacking the Mental Load of Physicians
Julia McNabb-Baltar and Pooja Amarapurkar
Physicians face a wide range of cognitive and emotional demands daily. Beyond patient care, physicians juggle administrative duties, educational roles, research responsibilities, complex communication, and the emotional toll of their work. This cumulative mental effort is known as the mental load. Mental load can lead to cognitive overload, increased stress, and ultimately contribute to burnout. Despite its significance, mental load is rarely addressed explicitly in medical training or workplace wellness programs. This workshop aims to fill that gap by helping physicians recognize, understand, and manage their mental load through practical strategies. By doing so, physicians can enhance their resilience, improve focus, and maintain a sustainable, fulfilling career in medicine.
More Than the Moment: Reframing Bad Outcomes and Moving Forward
Megan Bradley and Priyanka Amin
Unexpected and challenging outcomes are an unavoidable reality of medical practice, yet physicians are rarely trained to navigate the emotional and professional aftermath. Many clinicians internalize guilt, fear, or shame, often in isolation, which contributes to burnout and moral injury. The facilitators will start off the session by engaging the audience via interactive polling surrounding their experiences with bad outcomes. A brief didactic portion discussing examples of bad outcomes and defining the second victim phenomenon will follow, including the impact of adverse events both personally and professionally. Participants will engage in scenarios and role-playing of conversations with patients/families or colleagues following adverse events. Facilitators will lead a guided exercise reviewing internal coping strategies and external supports, including both individual and departmental strategies to supporting colleagues following adverse events. The session will close with a review of available resources for support. Participants will be provided with a handout summarizing key topics from the session, including available resources.
Epic Efficiency
Jose Abad, Gary Fischer, et al
This workshop focuses on physician personalization of tools within EpicCare. Participants will log in to their own live Production EpicCare accounts while workshop facilitators lead them through customization exercises. The session will accommodate participants both live and virtually through Microsoft Teams. The specific areas of customization covered will be tailored to participant needs and include: diagnosis, level of service (LOS), follow-up, and progress notes ‘Speed Buttons’; letter templates and default routing; In Basket QuickActions; ‘on-the-fly’ customizing orders on your preference list (including order panels); customizing SmartSets; procedure documentation macros; and Ambient AI. For each topic, we will demonstrate how it can help efficiency and walk users through building their own, with suggestions from workshop leaders for default choices. Facilitators will sit at-the-elbow with participants individually in person as needed.
