The Emergency Department at UPMC Bedford provides complete emergency care to people from throughout Bedford County. At UPMC Bedford, our doctors consistently provide patients with the best possible emergency care – no matter the time of day, or the complexity of illness or injury.

Offering big-city care in a small town atmosphere, our Emergency Department is able to provide care for an array of medical conditions. If a situation arises where a patient must be flown to another hospital within the UPMC network, UPMC Bedford is equipped with a heliport on the premises for air evacuation, and a fully equipped Emergency Command Center.

Specialists in obstetrics, urology, ear nose and throat, orthopeadics, and general surgery are on call and available to patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Also, the average wait time from arriving at the hospital to being seen by a physician is usually under 15 minutes.

COVID-19 Tests

If you think you’ve been exposed to COVID-19 and have only mild symptoms – and you do not have difficulty breathing – you can schedule a COVID-19 test at a designated test location. The Emergency Department is NOT the place to get a COVID-19 test UNLESS you are experiencing breathing problems or other severe symptoms.

Going to an Emergency Department with mild or no symptoms may create a long wait time for you to be seen and COVID-19 test results do not come back more quickly – they still will take one, two, or more days.

Stroke Care

UPMC Bedford is certified as an Acute Stroke Ready Hospital by The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. The certification recognizes hospitals equipped to treat stroke patients with timely, evidence-based care prior to transferring them to a Primary or Comprehensive Stroke Center.

The Emergency Department at UPMC Bedford also uses telemedicine to help assess possible stroke patients and give timely treatment. This system uses high-tech videoconferencing to link experts at the UPMC Stroke Institute to the UPMC Bedford Emergency Department physicians. The stroke experts assess the patient’s condition and recommend the best treatment for the patient.

In-House Hospitalist Connection

When necessary, patient care continues with our Hospitalists — board-certified or board eligible physicians who care for patients during their inpatient stay. Our hospitalists' are able to track test results and promptly order follow up tests and medications for patients.
