Scholarship Applications Now Available for Students Seeking Careers in Health Professions

The Memorial Hospital of Bedford County (MHBC) Foundation through the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies is now accepting applications from students interested in health care professions.

Students may apply for both the Health Professions Scholarships (includes Dr. Bert & Lucille Wiley, Mary Pearl Hunt, Blackburn, and Obert Scholarships) and the Thomas E. Bailey scholarship by completing one online application. Specific guidelines exist for each scholarship. Application deadline is March 31, 2020.

Multiphasic Blood Screening

The screenings involve a series of 28 tests, including cholesterol and triglycerides. Patients must fast for 12 hours and consume no alcohol for 24 hours prior to screening.

Cost is $25 for blood screening and $3 for urinalysis. Other tests available include TSH to check thyroid function for an additional $5, A1C to test for diabetic compliance for $5, and PSA for prostate cancer for $10. For an additional $3, test results can be sent to the patient.

UPMC Bedford has earned Advanced Disease-Specific Care Certification for Acute Stroke Ready Hospital from The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. The certification recognizes hospitals equipped to treat stroke patients with timely, evidence-based care prior to transferring them to a Primary or Comprehensive Stroke Center.

UPMC Bedford underwent a rigorous onsite review to assess its compliance with the Joint Commission’s Advanced Disease-Specific Care certification requirements, including:

  • A dedicated stroke-focused program
  • Staffing by qualified medical professionals trained in stroke care
  • Collaboration with local emergency management agencies
  • 24/7 ability to perform rapid diagnostic and laboratory testing
  • Ability to administer intravenous clot-busting medications to eligible patients
  • Availability of telemedicine technology

Stroke is the number five cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States.
