Visitors are welcome at any time with the patient's consent.

During flu season, UPMC East may place restrictions on visitors. Call the hospital for details before you visit: 412-357-3000.

Visiting Hours and Hospital Access

During regular hours of operation

Access to the hospital is through the main entrance or garage area.

Greeters at the main entrance will direct you to appropriate locations.

After 8:00 p.m.

After 8:00 p.m., visitors should access the hospital through the emergency department entrance.

UPMC East Security will:

  • Ask for your ID.
  • Give you a visitor's badge.
  • Direct you to the appropriate location.

If you access the hospital through the garage area after 8:00 p.m., Security will receive an alert and escort you to the emergency department for badging.

Overnight visitors

Visitors who wish to remain overnight must inform the charge nurse.

The charge nurse will notify Security and arrange for you to receive a visitor's badge.

UPMC East Visitor Guidelines

  • UPMC East allows flowers in all patient rooms, except for the ICU.
  • We allow Mylar balloons, but do not permit latex balloons.
  • Please check with the nurse before offering a patient anything to eat or drink.

Children visiting UPMC East

  • Children of any age are welcome to visit, except during flu season.
  • During flu season, UPMC East restricts children under 13 years of age to visit the hospital.
  • An adult must be with children under the age of 12 at all times. This rule applies in all rooms, lobbies, corridors, public restrooms, and the cafeteria.

To prevent infection

  • People who are coughing, sneezing, or ill should not visit.
  • Please cover coughs or sneezes with your arm.
  • Wash your hands upon entering and leaving patient rooms.
  • Please do not use patient restrooms unless your loved one has a private room and gives consent.
  • If we call for isolation, visitors must take all isolation precautions as the doctor or nurse directs.

Sometimes we may ask visitors to leave

We may ask you to leave the patient’s room if:

  • The doctor or nurse needs to examine the patient.
  • The patient’s condition has changed and requires care by a doctor or nurse.
  • The patient or care team member asks to be left alone.

Visitor restrictions

UPMC East may impose reasonable, clinically necessary restrictions or limitations on visitation based on the following:

  • Any court order limiting or restraining contact.
  • Threatening or violent behavior that presents a direct risk or threat to the patient, hospital staff, or others in the immediate environment.
  • Behavior that disrupts the functioning of the patient care unit.
  • Patient’s need or request for privacy or rest.
  • Patient’s risk of infection by the visitor.
  • Visitor’s risk of infection by the patient.
  • Extraordinary protections because of a pandemic or infectious disease outbreak.
  • Visitation that may interfere with the care of other patients. This includes reasonable limits on the number of guests at any one time.

Some reasons for restricted visitation include:

  • Patient confidentiality.
  • Frequent care needs of patients.
  • The risk of increased stimulation adversely affecting some patients.
