UPMC Podiatry Residency Program

UPMC Content 3

The UPMC Podiatry Residency Program is a 36-month program that incorporates clinical and academic experiences with the goal of producing well-rounded podiatric physicians and surgeons. Our program is guided by the philosophy that the foot or lower extremity must be treated with the patient’s total being in mind.

The UPMC Podiatry Residency Program is designed to:

  • Provide supervised, advanced clinical experience in the recognition and management of pedal conditions and secondary prevention of chronic disease
  • Emphasize the relationship between basic science and clinical practice by studying the complete physical patient record before, during, and after podiatric treatment
  • Familiarize the podiatrist with hospital policies, procedures, and operations
  • Measurably increase the diagnostic, therapeutic, and patient management skills of graduate podiatrists in the hospital and ambulatory care settings with emphasis on the surgical care of the lower extremity
  • Provide increased professional credentialing and act as a basis for the graduate podiatrists’ further professional credentialing
  • Reinforce personal characteristics and approaches to care of the resident trainees in areas such as self-directed learning, self-critical attitudes, and approaching clinical science with a genuine spirit of inquiry
  • Acquire, retain, and develop clinical staff who are properly credentialed and competent in patient care and resident instruction
  • Maintain and refine a clinical learning program that includes structured and unstructured experiences in the podiatric medical, surgical, and orthopaedic care of emergency, acute, or chronic health problems of adults and children
  • Conduct a well-managed program of selection, training, and evaluation of residents through development and attainment of program objectives, periodic program evaluation, and maintenance of good working relationships among the health care professionals who provide direct or indirect resident instructions that attain or surpass criteria set by the program’s accrediting agencies
