Students are paid while in training and offered full employment upon graduation and certification

HARRISBURG, Pa. – UPMC in Central Pa. is helping develop the next generation of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) with the start of a new class at its UPMC EMT Academy on Monday, May 1. UPMC is offering applicants the ability to get paid while they receive training, with an offer of employment upon successful EMT certification.

“The nation is facing a shortage of EMTs, and we’re working to fill that need locally through our innovative academy,” said Lou Baverso, president, UPMC in Central Pa. “These critical positions are filled by true heroes. When there’s a medical issue or emergency, they are among the first people there to offer help.”

EMTs are vital members of the team that responds to emergency calls, performs medical services, and transports patients to medical facilities. UPMC Community LifeTeam EMS serves more than 85 communities and has job openings throughout the region, including in Dauphin, York and Adams counties.

First launched in spring 2021, UPMC EMT Academy is an intensive, 10-week program that includes classroom work, written exams, skills education and testing and a one-day immersive training session designed to mimic a real shift.

Traditional EMT training programs may take six months or more to complete, and often the attendee is responsible for paying the class fees. Additionally, most trainees maintain a regular paying job on top of their classwork and then must find and apply for an EMT position after graduation.

UPMC EMT Academy removes time and cost barriers to training that can prevent individuals from pursuing their passions. Those who are accepted into the program become paid employees as soon as the training begins. Applicants for the Academy need no prior experience or medical training and move into permanent positions upon graduation and successful EMT certification.

“This is a great opportunity to discover a dynamic, in-demand and rewarding career as an EMT,” said Baverso.

UPMC EMT Academy Enrollment

UPMC EMT Academy will begin on Monday, May 1. Classes will be held for 10 weeks, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the UPMC education facility at 3 Walnut St., Lemoyne. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and have a high school diploma (or the equivalent).

Applications will be reviewed beginning in early March, until slots are filled.
