Other UPMC Hospitals in Central PA Earn 4-Star CMS Ratings, Making the Region a Beacon for Quality Health Care

August 5, 2024

HARRISBURG, Pa. UPMC Harrisburg, which includes UPMC West Shore and UPMC Community Osteopathic under its license, achieved the prestigious five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the highest rating possible using data that evaluates outcomes, patient experience and process.

Of nearly 5,000 U.S. hospitals evaluated, roughly 8 percent earned the highest five-star rating. In total, there are 381 hospitals nationwide and only 22 hospitals in Pennsylvania that received five-star ratings for 2024. UPMC Carlisle, UPMC Hanover, UPMC Lititz, and UPMC Memorial also achieved a remarkable four-star rating.

"The five-star rating for UPMC Harrisburg, UPMC West Shore and UPMC Community Osteopathic is a testament to our hospitals’ culture of excellence, compassion, and innovation", said Elizabeth Ritter, president, UPMC Harrisburg. "It reflects our relentless pursuit of quality, safety, and patient satisfaction. This achievement would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the entire team, from our clinical staff to our support services. The team plays a vital role in delivering exceptional care, and I'm grateful for their commitment to our community.”

CMS annually assigns star ratings to U.S. hospitals based on 46 different quality measures that are divided into five categories: mortality, patient experience, readmission rates, and timely and effective care. Typically, CMS reviews up to three years of quality data before issuing a star rating. CMS ratings are a valuable tool for patients and their families, aiding in making well-informed healthcare decisions and signaling the highest standard of care.

“This is a significant win for patients and UPMC in this region," said David Gibbons, senior vice president, Health Services Division and regional president, UPMC in Central Pa. "UPMC came to central Pennsylvania seven years ago with the mission to improve the health of the communities in the region through better access and innovation. This community has put so much trust in us and in return, our team is stronger and fully committed to providing the highest quality care possible.”

CMS is the federal agency that provides health coverage to more than 160 million people through Medicare, Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program and the Health Insurance Marketplace. Compared to 2023, CMS has awarded 102 fewer hospitals its five-star quality rating. For more information about the 2024 CMS Star Ratings, visit medicare.gov/care-compare.
