If you have diabetes, thyroid problems, or a hormone disorder, we can help. UPMC's doctors diagnose and treat all types of endocrine diseases.
And with our online visits, it's easier than ever to get the care that's right for you.
About Endocrine Telemedicine at UPMC
Telehealth is often an option whether you need a first visit, a second opinion, or follow-up care. That's because UPMC's doctors and staff have a vast knowledge of online care.
Your endocrinologist can often use a video visit to discuss hormone-related problems.
You may still need in-person testing, like bloodwork or a bone density scan. But telehealth can limit your need for in-person visits to UPMC.
After testing, online care also makes it easy for your doctor to review your results with you.
Endocrine care via telemedicine
We have 2 specialty centers at UPMC that use virtual visits:
Benefits of Endocrinology Telemedicine
Telehealth may work well for you if you:
- Live far from a UPMC hospital that offers endocrine disease care.
- Need a routine checkup for a chronic disease like diabetes or osteoporosis.
- Have transportation or mobility issues.
- Have a concern about something your doctor can check visually, like an enlarged thyroid.
Is an Online Endocrinology Visit Right for Me?
Both new and returning patients can schedule a virtual visit.
Most people with endocrine diseases need routine blood tests.
Your doctor may ask you to have testing before your online visit so you can go over the results. Or your doctor may order a test based on the results of a video visit.
Video visits often work well for returning patients whose condition is under control.
You may not need a physical exam or testing at that time. Your doctor can still gain vital information through a video visit.
What to Expect During Your Video Visit
After you book your video visit, your doctor's office will tell you how to log on.
UPMC's advanced video equipment and secure patient portals meet all HIPAA and cybersecurity standards.
Diabetes is a disease that needs data to manage well.
Your doctor will ask you to upload data from your devices before all visits, whether in person or online.
UPMC Endocrinology uses Tidepool to review:
- Blood glucose meters.
- Insulin pumps.
- Continuous glucose monitors.
- Tidepool® is a nonprofit that provides free, easy-to-use tools to help people manage their diabetes data.
UPMC has long offered virtual visits for people with diabetes who live in rural towns. That means both doctors and staff are experts in using video visits.
Some people have become so comfortable with telemedicine that they now choose it over in-person visits.
Health insurance plans we accept
UPMC accepts most health plans.
Before your online visit, check with your plan to make sure they cover telemedicine.
