Preparing for Your Office Visit

If your insurance provider requires a referral, please call your primary care doctor immediately after making your appointment with us. Your insurance may not cover your office visit if you do not get prior approval.

What to bring to your appointment

On the day of your visit, please bring:

  • Your health insurance card
  • Past lab and other test results
  • A list of medicines you take
  • A list of questions or concerns you’d like to discuss
  • Your primary care doctor’s and other treating physician's contact details

Bringing this information will help us understand your case and keep your doctor informed about your care.

What to Expect at Your Office Visit

If visiting the UPMC Esophageal and Lung Surgery Institute for your first office visit, please arrive early and allow ample time for your appointment. You’ll need to complete a general medical form and have an exam.

Please note:

  • The amount of time the doctor spends with you will vary depending on your condition.
  • Although we make every effort to stay on schedule and see people at the appointed times, emergencies do occur and some people may require additional time with the doctor and nursing staff.
  • We hope you understand when we do experience delays. If you cannot wait, we’ll gladly reschedule your appointment.

Preparing for the Hospital and Your Surgical Procedure

We will take care of all the arrangements for your hospital stay.

Your surgeon or a nurse on your medical team will give you details about your thoracic surgical procedure, including:

  • Typical recovery times
  • Any pre- or post-operation requirements

Important:

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery.
  • If your surgeon approved medication for the morning of surgery, you may take it in the morning with a very small sip of water.
  • Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your check-in time the morning of your surgery.

What to bring to the hospital

  • Toiletries
  • Sleepwear (i.e. pajamas, robe, slippers)
  • Insurance card

What not to bring

  • Jewelry
  • Expensive electronics

What to Expect After Surgery

When you wake up after surgery, you’ll remain in recovery until you can breathe on your own. The doctor and nursing staff will determine when you can move to your hospital room.

It’s likely that you’ll need to stay in the hospital for two or more days. Your family and friends may bring any personal items you need once you’re awake and in your room.
