Hematology is a specialized branch of medicine that examines blood and helps diagnose and treat blood-related conditions.
At UPMC, our seasoned classical hematology experts specialize in the diagnosis and care of people with nonmalignant (noncancerous) diseases related to:
- Bleeding.
- Coagulation (blood clotting).
- Congenital (inborn) and acquired anemias.
- Rare hematological diseases.
We also have special expertise in managing women’s issues, including anemia, bleeding disorders, and low platelet counts during pregnancy. Our experts see patients in our clinic as well as consult with other divisions on patients with blood disorders.
Our physician-scientists have dedicated their lives to research on ways to improve the outcomes of people with blood-related illnesses. A strong component of our program is the education of other clinicians regarding the issues, management, and treatment of classical hematologic disorders.
What Services Does Hematology Offer?
We provide:
- Acute longitudinal care — Comprehensive, long-term management of care for people with noncancerous blood disorders.
- Consulting service to other divisions — We consult for surgery, internal medicine, and ob-gyn on the expert management of long-term, presurgical, and postsurgical care for their patients with hematological disorders.
- Multidisciplinary case review — Review by more than 100 University of Pittsburgh faculty members, physicians, and other specialists who meet weekly to present challenging cases
- Physician e-consults via telemedicine — We consult for physicians in the Pennsylvania-Ohio-West Virginia tri-state area on patient evaluation, testing, lab results, immune issues, and clinical management, and make arrangements for patients who need to be seen in Pittsburgh.
- Second (and third) opinions — Expert review of cases with no clear-cut diagnoses.
- Sickle-cell anemia-specific case reviews — Expert review of sickle-cell cases every two weeks to manage acute issues and long-term care.
- Telemedicine patient visits — Home appointments through private HIPAA-supported technology allow intermittent remote visits for patients when physical examinations aren’t necessary.
