Hematology Diagnostic Tests

At UPMC, we offer a complete range of diagnostic tests for all types of benign (noncancerous) blood disorders. These tests and state-of-the-art imaging procedures help our experts diagnose your condition and develop a tailored treatment plan.

Blood Tests

• Bethesda test — Detects antibodies that may block factor VIII or IX.
• Blood differential test — Measures levels of different types of white blood cells (neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils).
• Clotting factor assays (coagulation panel) — Measures the level or activity of specific clotting factors.
• Clotting factor VIII tests — Measures the activity of factor VIII; very low levels may indicate hemophilia A.
• Complete blood count (CBC) — Measures RBCs, WBCs, platelets, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and MCV.
• Factor XIII antigen and activity assays — Assesses factor XIII deficiency.
• Genetic testing — Identifies genetic causes of bleeding disorders.
• Liver panel — Checks for liver damage that may cause bleeding disorders.
• Lupus anticoagulant test — Screens for antibodies linked to autoimmune clotting issues.
• Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) blood test — formerly known as the volume globulaire moyen blood test, measures the size of your red blood cells that carry oxygen from your lungs to cells throughout your body.
• Mixing test — Distinguishes between clotting factor deficiencies and antibody-related problems.
• Partial thromboplastin time (PTT/aPTT) test — Measures how long it takes blood to clot, helping to identify issues with specific clotting factors.
• Peripheral blood smear — Examines the number and shape of blood cells.
• Prothrombin time (PT) test — Evaluates blood clotting and includes INR for standardization.
• Reticulocyte count — Determines the number of immature red blood cells.
• Von Willebrand factor (vWF) tests — Assesses the amount and function of vWF to diagnose types of von Willebrand disease.

Prenatal Screenings

• Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) — Tests placental tissue for genetic disorders, especially in hemophilia carriers.
• Umbilical cord blood test — Screens newborns for bleeding disorders.
